Plans submitted to expand capacity of Chapel Gate Eco Park

10 June 2026
Plans to expand Chapel Gate Eco Park have been submitted to Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council.

If approved, the planning application will make our 15.8-hectare site more efficient and sustainable.

The updated proposals include:

  • Introducing state-of-the-art, AI-led materials recovery technology (MRF) which will pre-sort material for the Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) on-site and allow an additional 25,000 tonnes of recyclable materials to be processed per year.
  • Increasing the site’s capacity to recycle green waste and wood waste by 5,000 tonnes each, helping to turn more local materials to products such as compost, soil improvers and biomass fuel which support the rural economy.
  • Enabling the site to deal with more local residual waste by removing even more recoverable material, increasing capacity from 60,000 to 105,000 tonnes per year.
  • Enabling an increase to local food waste recycling in line with local and national requirements.
  • Supporting around 30 additional jobs at the site.
  • A new office, welfare, visitor and education facility will be provided.

The facility would also generate enough energy to heat and power over 14,000 homes each year, through converting non-recyclable waste into electricity and heat for the national grid, while reducing reliance on landfill and avoiding the need to transport waste long distances for treatment elsewhere.

A public consultation and exhibition was held at our Chapel Lane site on 1st May 2026.

Mike Eborne, Eco’s Technical Development Director, said: “This is an exciting and important development for Chapel Gate Eco Park. By building on existing infrastructure and investing in innovative technology, we can recycle more local material, recover valuable resources that might otherwise be lost, and reduce the carbon impact of local waste.”

If the planning application is approved by BCP Council, construction of the new facility could begin in 2029.
