Role: Project Development Engineer

Working Hours: 08:30 – 17:00 Monday to Friday

Contract type: Full-time, Permanent

Purpose:

Reporting into the Technical Development Director (TDD), the Project Development Engineer (TPDE) plays a crucial role in supporting the business’s enhancement and development projects in sustainable energy and resource management, as well as supporting Managers in finding engineering solutions to operational problems.

Key Responsibilities:

Work closely with the Technical Development Director (TDD) in conceiving, developing, and delivering growth projects and site-wide engineering upgrades from concept through to operational integration.

Support technical and consenting aspects of project delivery, such as building project plans, reviewing and developing technical diagrams (e.g., P&ID, PFD, SLD, General Arrangements), and performing Mass & Energy balances.

Work closely with Site and Plant management teams to devise, engineer, and deliver plant enhancement projects and retrofits.

Draft detailed Scopes of Work and technical specifications for equipment procurement and EPC tenders.

Conduct market research to identify suitable emerging and existing technologies that can be integrated into workflows to improve efficiency and ROI.

Work with the Commercial Team for market aspects and the Operational Team for technical integration and compliance.

Continually identify areas to reduce costs and improve throughput using data-driven engineering solutions.

Advise the Leadership Team on project risks, providing workable, costed solutions that comply with Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality legislation such as; CDM and EA permitting.

About You:

Essential

Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline or equivalent (Mechanical, Process, Chemical, etc.).

A strong willingness to learn, adapt to new technologies, and a proactive drive to develop professional knowledge and industry skills.

Strong ability to interpret complex engineering schematics—including P&IDs, PFDs, SLDs, and General Arrangements—and perform technical process calculations.

Working knowledge of UK health, safety, environmental, and quality legislation, including EA permitting and CDM requirements.

A proactive approach to identifying risks and opportunities, implementing technical improvements that align with business goals.

Demonstrable interest or experience in the creative process of business development and engineering plant upgrades.

Diligent and highly organized with the ability to manage multiple technical workstreams and documentation sets simultaneously.

A great team player who can collaborate effectively across departments (Commercial, Operational, and Leadership).

Full UK driving license and flexibility for potential site visits as required.

Desirable

Master’s degree in engineering or a relevant discipline.

Experience with project management frameworks and the ability to mitigate project risks with costed, actionable solutions. Project management qualification would beneficial.

Ability to support the Finance Director (FD) and TDD in modelling investment opportunities and advising on project viability and ROI.

Previous experience in energy generation (conventional or renewable), recycling/waste management (MRF or ERF), or Anaerobic Digestion.

Familiarity with Ofgem processes and UK renewable subsidy streams (e.g., FITs, ROCs, RHI, GGSS, PPAs, RGGOs, REGOs).

Health and safety qualification, such as IOSH or NEBOSH etc.
