The Ultimate Guide to Laying Turf

A beautiful, lush green lawn can transform your outdoor space, making it a welcoming place for relaxation and recreation.

In the UK, where the climate is relatively mild and conducive to grass growth, laying turf is a popular way to achieve that perfect lawn. We’ll guide you through the process of laying turf, from preparation to maintenance, to help you achieve the envy-worthy garden you’ve always dreamed of.

Choose the Right Time

Timing is crucial when it comes to laying turf. The best time for turfing is during the late summer or early autumn, typically between September and October. During this period, the soil is still warm from summer, and there is often more rainfall, which helps the turf establish its roots before winter.

Prepare the Soil

Before laying turf, prepare your soil to ensure optimal growth. Follow these steps:

  • Clear the area – Remove any weeds, debris, or existing grass from the site.
  • Improve soil structure – Loosen compacted soil by aerating it with a garden fork or aerator. Incorporate organic matter, such as compost, to improve soil fertility and structure.
  • Level and firm the soil – Use a rake to create a smooth, level surface, and then gently compact it using a roller.

Choose High-Quality Turf

Selecting the right turf is crucial for a successful lawn. Common turf grasses include fescue, bentgrass, and ryegrass. Choose a turf variety that suits your specific needs, such as shade tolerance or low maintenance. We’ve created a handy guide to help you choose the right turf.

Lay the Turf

Follow these steps to lay turf effectively:

  • Start along a straight edge, such as a path or fence, and work your way outward. Lay the turf in a staggered brickwork pattern to avoid noticeable seams.
  • Butt the edges of the turf pieces closely together, but avoid overlapping.
  • Use a sharp knife or spade to trim the turf to fit irregular areas or borders.
  • After laying the turf, gently roll the surface with a roller to ensure good soil-to-turf contact.

Water and Maintain

Immediately after laying turf, water it thoroughly to help the roots establish themselves. Continue to water the lawn regularly, especially during dry spells.

Additionally:

  • Avoid heavy use of the lawn for the first few weeks to allow the roots to develop.
  • Mow the lawn regularly but avoid cutting more than one-third of the grass height at a time.
  • Keep the lawn free of weeds by hand weeding or using appropriate herbicides.

Laying turf can be a rewarding experience, resulting in a lush, green lawn that enhances your outdoor space. By following these tips and maintaining your lawn, you’ll enjoy a beautiful garden that’s the envy of your neighbours.
